Living remotely in the Far West can be a challenge at times. Broken Hillians have further to travel anywhere and no one can ever pick our timezone correctly.
"But what about the actors in Far West NSW who have dreams of performing in Sydney?" I hear you ask. Well, thanks to a CASP grant from West Darling Arts, in September of this year (date TBC) we are planning to perform a play in Broken Hill AND in Sydney at Darlo Drama. The Darlo cast will perform the same play, also in both cities (yes, Broken Hill IS considered a city).
Travel expenses will be covered, and we anticipate billeting you with Sydney-based actors.
If you're interested, email Theatre 44 or contact Armando Licul:

NB: The choice of play has not yet been decided.

"Call for Expressions of Interest
Broken Hill Repertory Society and Darlo Drama, with the support of West Darling Arts, are excited to announce a co-production project that will bring together our two theatres in a special event. We will be producing the same play in Broken Hill and Sydney with local casts of non-professional actors. Simultaneously rehearsing independently of each other,
the two casts will come together to perform the play both here, and then in Sydney. Separated by a thousand kilometres our two companies will delve into the same play in their unique ways, exploring the playwright's work from isolated perspectives. The different directorial approaches create distinct avenues for interpretation of the same drama, a fascinating experiment in seeking synergy, or perhaps complete diversion offering two points of view in approaching one story. This project is slated to commence rehearsals from July with performance seasons in Broken Hill and Sydney in late September, under the auspices of Broken Hill Repertory Society and hosted at Theatre 44. The structure of the project looks like this:
PRE PROJECT START: Roles are cast with locals in both Syd and BH.
REHEARSALS UNDERWAY: The two productions are rehearsed independently of each other. Glen Hamilton directing in Sydney, Armando
Licul directing in BH.
SYD COMPANY TRAVEL TO BH: SYD company billeted in BH.
PRODUCTION WEEK IN BH: Sydney company rehearses with BH cast.
Production week intensive.
BH PERFORMANCE SEASON: A minimum of 2, maximum of 4 performances in BH.
COMPANY TRAVELS TO SYDNEY: BH company billeted in Sydney.
PRODUCTION WEEK IN SYD: Full company rehearsals at Darlo studio in Darlinghurst. SYDNEY PERFORMANCE SEASON: Follows the same pattern as BH performance season, however the number of performances is TBD depending on factors regarding the possible inclusion of the project in the Sydney Fringe Festival. We are seeking Expressions of Interest from people who are interested in being part of the project as actors. This is an exciting and adventurous project for both our companies, looking to build our relationship for continued shared events, workshops and exposure across the country. Exposure to a Sydney audience for our performers is guaranteed to be a lifelong memory.
Participants must be prepared to spend up to a week in Sydney. We would love to hear of your interest in this project and invite you to
introduce yourself to us by contacting us at theatre44.brokenhill@gmail.com
Please include the subject line "Co-Pro query"
By contacting us you will be included in all news and updates about the
project, including announcements for audition and other production dates."
